Friends' Day 2009

Friends from far and wide gathered in Wells on weekend of 9th and 10th May for the Annual Friends’ Day at the Cathedral.

In the morning there was an opportunity to visit parts of the Cathedral not normally open to visitors and to hear about other parts of the Cathedral from specialist guides.  At noon there was a Eucharist, with the Dean as President and the Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir singing a setting by Harold Darke.

Lunch was followed by the Annual General Meeting at which Dr Robert Dunning was re-elected a Chairman of the Friends’ Council.  Elections were also held for the Friends’ Council and Mr Tom Burr, Prebendary Elsa van der Zee and Mr Clive Edney were elected.  Mr Geoffrey Egan, Treasurer, in presenting the 2008 accounts was able to bring the meeting up to date with the fact that the Friends had paid a further £150,000 in 2009 towards the total cost of the Friends’ Building

After the AGM there were further tours and talks in the Cathedral before tea in Vicars Hall.  The work of the Friends was remembered at the Cathedral evensong at the end of the day.
