Friends' Visit to Warwick
Jill Wrightson led a group of Friends on a very enjoyable visit to Warwick on 29th April. The day began at Lord Leycester’s Hospital, a beautiful medieval timber-framed building, where the Master, Leonard Nijinksy, lead a conducted tour of what is a retirement home for servicemen, first founded in 1571 for the old soldiers of Queen Elizabeth I by the Earl of Leicester. The tour included the Master’s and Brethren’s gardens, immaculately kept formal Tudor knot gardens and a bowling green.
A delicious lunch of coronation chicken was served in the Great Hall and after lunch, those who had had the Tour of the Hospital proceeded to the parish church, the Collegiate Church of St. Mary. (Those who had been to St Mary’s before lunch then toured the Hospital and Gardens.)
In the afternoon, the town guide, Maureen Sutherland, was ready to show more of the history of Warwick on the optional walking tour of the town. A very interesting day was rounded off with a Choral Evensong in St. Mary’s Church.
